CONSTRUCTION PROJECTS BY LEVEL BEGINNING LEVEL (Ages 9-11 years) Must use patterns provided for pillow case, laundry bag, chef orwork apron, tote bag, and garment bag. Simple Construction Projects:-Pillow Case (1) (Pattern Provided)-Laundry Bag (Pattern Provided)-Chef or Work Apron (Pattern Provided) Moderately Difficult Construction Projects:-Tote Bag (Pattern Provided)-Skirt with elastic waist-Shorts with elastic waist Difficult Construction Projects:-Simple two-piece active sportswear (no collars, no set-in sleeves)-Simple Curtains-Item or Simple garment made of polar fleece Fun Item:-Decorated Ready-made Shirt – using fusible web, fabric scraps, trims, buttons orpaints. Paints, if used, must be with one or more of the above. Nocommercial iron-on transfers. Fun Item:-Pot Holder or Hot Mat Beginning Poster:-Poster: Must be on 14” x 22” poster board. No 3 dimensional Posters. Use oneof the following themes:1. Label the parts of a sewing machine.2. Illustrate and label up to 10 items needed in a basic sewing kit. Beginning Sample Notebook:-May be entered all years but 3 new samples must be entered each year. Samplesmust be attached to sample cards available from Extension Office. Note projectyear the sample was made in upper right hand corner of card.1. Three seam finish samples – edge-stitched, pinked and edge-stitched zigzag.2. Button w/thread shank and button w/shank.3. Snap and hook and eye samples4. Hem samples – machine top-stitch hem, catch stitch.5. Three basting samples – hand even, hand uneven, machine basting.6. Two decorative stitches – machine decorative stitch (your choice).cross stitch.7. Elastic casing sample.8. Interfacing samples – non-woven, woven and fusible.9. Facing sample – grade, under stitch and clip. Intermediate Level (ages 12-14) Simple Construction Projects:-Bath Robe-Pull-on top and coordinating bottom with elastic waist (shorts, pants, or skirt)-Blanket with binding (can be for human or animal) Moderately Difficult Construction Projects:-Shorts, Pants, Skirt, or Culottes w/waistband-Item made of Polar Fleece-One-piece garment (dress, jumpsuit, jacket, shirt, etc.) using one or more of thetechniques from the Intermediate Level sample Notebook. It is recommended toattach a 3”x5” card indicating techniques used Difficult Construction Projects:-Two piece garment using one or more of the techniques from the IntermediateLevel Sample Notebook. It is recommended to attach a 3” x 5” card indicatingtechniques used.-Any non-clothing item using one or more of the techniques from the IntermediateLevel Sample Notebook. It is recommended to attach a 3” x 5” card indicatingtechniques used. Fun Item:-Recycle a garment using one or more of the following techniques: machinedecorative stitches, flat braid, sew-on appliqués, hand embroidery. Show“before” picture and include a cost sheet. Fun Item:-Decorate a garment using one or more of the following techniques: machinedecorate stitches, flat braid, sew-on appliqués, hand-embroidered or othertechniques. Must include at least 1 sewn technique. Attach a 3”x5” cardindicating techniques used. Fun Item:-Sewn item related to another project. Attach 3”x5” card indicating project. Intermediate Poster:-Intermediate Poster (no 3 dimensional posters). Must be on 14” x 22” posterboard. Must use one of the following themes:1. Cost comparison of ready-made or home-sewn garment similar infabric and design.2. Show a pattern and 3 samples of appropriate fabrics. Tell why fabricis appropriate on attached sheet of plain paper.3. Five samples of fabric weaves with fiber content to include knit, plainweave, satin weave, twill weave, and a non-woven fabric. Intermediate Sample Notebook:-May be entered in all years. Notebook must include samples from beginninglevel and 3 new samples must be added each year. Samples must be attachedto the sample cards available from the Extension Office. Note project year thesample was made in upper right hand corner of the card.10. Three seam finished samples – serged or hairline; French seam-clean finish.11. Buttonhole and Button – covered button; machine buttonhole with button.12. Two zipper samples – centered; lapped.13. Hem samples – machine blind hem stitch and hand blind hem stitch.14. Machine stripe or plaid – horizontal match and one way design fabric match.15. Pleats – box and knife.16. Dart samples – straight, curved, and double pointed darts.17. Waistband sample18. Three Decorative Techniques: One of the following – flat braid, bias trim, rickrack, one decorative machine stitch; hand embroidered sample. Advanced Level ( ages 15-19) Simple Construction Projects:-Item made with Polar Fleece-Two-piece ensemble using one or more of the techniques from the AdvancedSample Notebook. It is recommended to attach a 3” x 5” card indicatingtechnique used. Moderately Difficult Construction Projects:-Lined skirt, pants or jacket.-Coat - lined or unlined-Backpack, daypack, or fanny pack Difficult Construction Projects:-Coat – lined or unlined-Lined suit or dress-Special occasion garment – i.e. prom dress, English riding habit-Item or garment from fabric such as leather, ultra suede, fur, Gortex, etc. Fun Item:-Two pieces of travel accessories such as jewelry case, shaving bag, etc.-Garment constructed from another textile product such as a blanket, towel, sheet-Recycled Item (attached before picture and cost sheet).-Embellished GarmentEducational Display: Choose one of the following topics for a 3’x3’x3’educational display:- Report of project involving clothing for special situation (i.e. pesticides,industrial, protective).- Self-determined, such as report on handicapped and/or elderly specializedclothing. Must emphasize construction, usability, practicality, and need.Advanced Sample Notebook:-May be entered all years. Notebook must have samples from beginning andintermediate levels and 3 new samples must be added each year. Must beattached to sample cards available from Extension Office. Note project year thesample was made in upper right corner of the card.19. Three seam finishes – Hong Kong, mock flat fell, and stretch.20. Bound buttonhole and button.21. Covered snap and hook and eye.22. Hand picked zipper sample.23. Mock fly zipper sample.24. Three hem samples – rolled hem, Hong Kong with blind hem stitch and miteredcorner in hem.25. Matching a stripe of plaid in Chevron pattern.26. Two lace applications – as a hem edge and as an insertion into fabric.27. Three decorative techniques – select one of the following:-piping, bias trim, bead edging, sequin strip;-machine appliqué-picot edging28.
